Silent Night

Music

19 Dec

I love Christmas music, there’s no doubt about that. From the Pentatonix Christmas albums, to Mariah Carey’s 1994 holiday CD (which features the mega-hit “All I Want For Christmas,” a favorite of mine)…. there are just so many awesome holiday songs out there and it seems like I discover even more favorites each year!

But if you ask me what my favorite Christmas song of all time is, I’m definitely going to say “Silent Night.” My mom used to sing it to me all the time when I was a baby– and it was one of the first Christmas songs I heard as a child, so it definitely has a special place in my heart.

More importantly, the song celebrates Jesus’ coming into the world because we needed a Savior. I touched on this last year with my Christmas reflection, but I’m going to say it again. God loved us so much that He became human when Christ was born. That is huge! And sometimes during the holidays, we can get carried away with the shopping, decorations, etc., to the extent that we lose focus on the true meaning of Christmas; we forget that “Christ the Savior is born,” as the song says.

In my opinion, there’s no better way to convey the super-powerful message of “Silent Night” than with this beautiful rendition by none other than Demi Lovato. Since the early 2000’s I have been an avid listener of her music, and although she may not necessarily be a Christian artist, I admire her for her strong faith in God. She’s an example of someone who has been through stuff, but come back stronger than ever. (And as someone who has seen her live in concert a few times, I must admit she is super talented). Her rendition of “Silent Night” really reminds us what’s important about the holidays… and I feel that it’s something we all need to be reminded of this time of year.
